“Men do not quit playing because they grow old; they grow old because they quit playing.” – Oliver Wendell Holmes
And because I want you to stay forever young, today I’m giving away a copy of Margaret Bloom‘s book: Making Peg Dolls. The more peg dolls you make the younger you become. I was 41 before I got this book, now I am 7 years younger (1 year per peg doll I made). This fun book (192 pages) has over 60 different doll designs with step by step tutorials and patterns for you to play with. The peg dolls in the pictures above are not in the book, but they were inspired by it. Margaret’s animation also inspired me to create the GIF animation above.
For a chance to win this book, simply leave a comment on this post. I will announce the winner on Monday, February 25, 2013.
BONUS: With the book I will include one of the peg dolls that I made. Just let me know your choice from the picture where I numbered the 7 characters.

You cease to amaze me! These dolls are fantastic – they are bursting with personality! I can’t wait to share this post with my daughter Hannah. She loves all things small and wee – it would be so much fun to make these with her. And to top it off, she has been begging my husband to help her make an animation, so this is right up her alley! She will be thrilled to see this post. Thank you so much for sharing – you just never know who you will touch and inspire with your creations.
PS: Would be fun to use your dolls as a children’s story prompt – Doll #3 looks as if she has something to share!! =)
Yay Lucy! I hope that Hannah enjoys this post. Making the animation is lots of fun. Hannah should make her own. It is so exciting seeing the little characters come to life through motion.

My 82 year old mother says that she will never live long enough to get all of the creative thoughts out of her head. I would love this book for my very creative daughter and her 3 year old son. These would be something they could make together. Since he LOVES yellow dump trucks, I think he would love #5.
Good luck, Lezlie!

I have a whole box full of blank wooden figures, many of them are peg dolls. This book was perfect. It inspired us to open that box and start creating some fun characters.

Your peg dolls look so fun and cute! I love the expressions in their eyes! My favorite is the last one, number 7.. such a sweet and cheeky and clever look at the same time:D
The book looks great and it would be a wonderful gift to get. I offer a (free) workshop on creating your own handmade dolls from scratch on a community center and this book could be a great addition to that. Just looking at the peg dolls my brain already started working and thinking about other materials (specially the recicling ones)that could give the same base to build a doll like that.
Also, O.W. Holmes quote is just perfect and I put it on my skecthbook just as a good reminder when things look a bit grey.
Thanks for sharing this with us!
Glaucia, it’s great to hear that you teach a free workshop on doll making. It must be fun! Yes, I think that lots of objects could be used as a base for making dolls. I’m thinking of bottles, yogurt cups…

I made many of these peg dolls when my daughter was little. Now she makes all kinds of stuff herself 🙂 I think she would love # 6 the best and would craft a large family to go with her (this sentence makes me think of the book “Red is Best”, lol).
Hi Anu! I think that you should keep making peg dolls just for the fun of it, and then put them together with your daughter’s peg dolls so you both can create a whole peg doll society 🙂
