“Behind every beautiful thing, there’s some kind of pain.”― Bob Dylan
Frida was a genius at turning suffering and pain into beauty. That’s the main reason why she is such an inspiration to me. I tried to capture that with this paper doll. Her skirt is a “mobile” universe that carries the beautiful and the ugly things that shaped her 46 years of life.
I enjoyed painting this new Frida so much! She is available as a paper doll here and as a print here. After finishing this other project, I still wanted to create something else based on Frida Kahlo. That’s how the idea of this paper doll was born. I hope that you enjoy it!
Have a great Friday and a wonderful weekend!
Elsita 🙂
The first sight seeing Frida, i see YOU! She looks so you, then the description is exactly Elsa, a genius at turning suffering and pain into beauty.
Good weekwend, Frida!
Thanks, HQ! That’s a big compliment!

Beautiful! There is such a sweetness in her face that I love. I got to see wonderful show a few years ago at the MOMA SF and they were able to display some of her gorgeous clothes. I love combing over the book I bought, filled with pictures of her extensive wardrobe of embroidered pieces. She is amazing.
Thanks, Elizabeth! Frida’s clothes were the best. I saw some of them at her house in Coyoacan. The jewelry was also amazing. The visual part of her life is mind blowing.

Many of the Frida portraits actually frighten me….So much pain in them…You have captured, expressed something softer. Maybe a glimpse of that interior place….free from suffering….Quiet, serene….still. I’ve purchased the doll to remind me….Of this place and you, the artist who shares this other Frida with others. Thank you.
Susan
Thanks a lot, Susan! It took me a little while to get the facial expression that I was looking for. I didn’t want her to be smiling too much or to look too serious. What I had in mind was a serene and peaceful expression. I have studied lots of Frida’s photos and self portraits but there is one image that I just love. It is Frida as a young girl. She was an old soul even as a little girl. Here is the link to the photo: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/df/Guillermo_Kahlo_-_Frida_Kahlo,_June_15,_1919_-_Google_Art_Project.jpg

I see what you mean. I am a children’s art teacher….and have seen that expression a few times. Such a rare and beautiful thing….that only art can express truly. You have really managed to capture it for us…I think you must have spent a very long while getting that “look” just so. Beautiful!
Susan
So beautiful and inspiring!!
Thanks, mk! 🙂

The concept of your Frida doll is superb! I love the way her limbs move, despite her pain.
Thanks, Salley! I’m glad that you liked the Frida in motion 🙂

The truth behind that quote is painful in itself…it makes me think about the degrees of beauty…surely there are many beautiful things which are not associated with pain. I think of Izzy’s violin playing. She plays beautifully now but it is true: she has not experienced any significant suffering in her life and I can see, until that happens, her music will rest more on the periphery of beauty. Beautiful, yes, but not in a truly informed way. To reach into the depths of beauty, one must be familiar to some degree with its opposite.
Your paper doll is mesmerizing.
Dear Kirsten, I love what you said:
“To reach into the depths of beauty, one must be familiar to some degree with its opposite.”
I agree. My daughter Natalie, just like Izzy, hasn’t experienced real pain yet. But children are so sensitive regardless of their personal experiences. They have their own way to feel sympathy and to understand those who suffer and struggle.
I’m so glad that you liked this Frida 🙂
Sending a hug!
