Last year I found Cihanbey Boutique. The beautiful photographs from this shop captured my attention. I decided to draw free versions of them in my sketchbook using black ink. I added collage elements to some of the drawings and ink in pale colors. Then I distressed the papers using green tea and ironed them with a hot iron… all of this for the sake of having fun on a weekend.
My intention by sharing these drawings is to inspire you to do simple experiments, using anything that captures your eye as a starting point. It could be anything. Playing is a great way to open doors for exploration.
Such a great reminder! I often do “fabric studies”, experimenting with different manipulation techniques, but for some reason have not allowed myself the same freedom of play with other materials like paper, paint, etc.
I really love how each of your pieces have that uniquely beautiful Elsita quality to them, but still capture the spirit of the original photographs. The addition of the collage elements adds such depth and meaning.
Did the texture in the paper result from the dyeing & then ironing?
Thank you for sharing your experiments!
Thank you, Terry.
Yes, the paper in its original state was totally flat and white. But after all the treatment with tea and heat, it became rich and textured. That was my favorite part of this experiment. You can do the same thing with fabric, assuming that you want to use it as a background for an artwork. It is a lot of fun 🙂
Thanks for sharing your drawings and mixings and seeings. Right now, I am mostly drawn to clay, (like a love magnet!) that I take tweensy time for other media. I do have a notebook filling, filling up with ideas, ideas for sometime in the…….
My children are leaving, one gone and another out the door this year. What a heart ache to have them go! I have a real ache in my heart. However! Art relieves. And so does writing down ideas.
Here’s one I got from your blog today: Take a weekend this year to etch on copper! Yee haw!

Yes, Susan, as you said: Art relieves. The medium doesn’t really matter, all we need is to keep creativity alive. That way the brain stays active and focused on the positive. It must be hard to have an empty nest. I have some friends that are going through the same and it’s hard for all.
Yay for etching copper on a weekend!
Feel better!
Elsita 🙂
Hi Elsa,
Love seeing the result of your inspiration! It certainly shows how we should follow through to allow our creativity kick in when we experience things that tickle our fancies or warm our hearts!
Thanks!
