When I first saw these pieces by Carine Neutjens, I thought that they were ceramics. What a surprise when I found out that they were actually made of glass! As Gallery Phase says: Carine Neutjens’ bowls remind one of stone, coral, lava and other natural elements. These are extremely vulnerable, fragile pieces which seem to have come straight from nature.”

Don’t you feel inspired to do something with glass one day? It seems such a wonderful medium to explore. Remember the beautiful work of Steffen Dam, the amazing glass sculptures of Christina Bothwell and also Wesley Fleming‘s glass bugs? I feel so inspired!

Yes!!! One of my favourite objects is a *glass orange*, that isn’t really glass, but plastic beaded, over probably styrofoam. But it is so radiant, like something from a heavenly garden. It cost me 30 cents I think, in the 70’s, on sale after Christmas, and I treasure it. When I see it, I see jewels, or glass beads–and as soon as I saw this post, I saw the glass beads, or maybe it’s called frit. < neat word. I realize. so often when I read your blog, that I am insatiable about wanting to know how everything is made, and making it myself. Wouldn't it be fun to do a residency somewhere, and be able to just explore glass? (I can think of a place I saw–will try to remember the name… Not Penland, somewhere else, but Penland would be fun also.)
That was my first thought. Now I must look again at your glass links.
Hi, Alison,
I am fascinated by this way to work with glass. Per what I read it is called: pate de verre. It is the technique used with these pieces. I will check to see if Penland offers classes. It must be so much fun. I also feel like learning about the techniques used by the artists that I feature on this blog. There are sooo many things that we can do with different materials. The possibilities are endless!

Christina Bothwell! yes, just love what she does with Spirit and glass. Seeing her work, it seems so obvious, that it’s the perfect medium, and yet, it’s such a wonderful surprise too.
