Hair as an Object of Creative Expression

Hair as an Object of Creative Expression

I think that hair is such a fascinating thing. Wikipedia says: “Hair has great social significance for human beings.” That is right. Hair, or the lack of it, could be so defining for human beings. Hair has been and continues to be an object of interest for creative people. Below you see a group of images that illustrate the expressive possibilities of hair. I hope that you enjoy them and hopefully, feel inspired to create something that involves this amazing filamentous biomaterial.

  1. Some of these have me itching as though I have just had a hair cut and others have me gaping in awe: hair leaves, necklace, EGGS! You have gathered these for us! What a gift you are to the world. Thank you.

  2. Oh, how I love this! I have naturally curly hair (and as anyone with curly hair knows, finding a way to manage it & make it look good is a lifelong obsession!) and I’m an artist, so seeing these images is great fun for me! Thanks, Elsita!

    • Dear Lee, as a member of the curly hair club myself, I understand what you said about our lifelong obsession. Once upon a time when I was a little girl, it was me against my big, unmanageable, rebel, fussy-wire-like hair. I was at war. Over 40 years later I can say that my hair has been almost domesticated. The big war is over, I only experience small battles. But the fascination continues. Now I look at hair in a different way. It is more like an art supply, a material to be used creatively :)

  3. An inspiring post! I am studying Mortuary Science, and have become fascinated with Victorian hair art created during mourning. So beautiful and intricate–these pieces definitely speak to the significance of hair.

I also want to share a contemporary artist I admire who works with hair, Wenda Gu. I had the opportunity to view one of his pieces in person–breathtaking!

    • Thanks a lot, Les, for introducing me to Wenda Gu! His work is amazing. I would love to see his pieces in person one day. You’re studying Mortuary Science! I would like to trade places with you for a few months, it must be such a fascinating career. I have also been in love with the Victorian hair art. I have seen a couple of beautiful mourning brooches and necklaces. It is mind blowing what they did with hair.

      • I’m glad you enjoy his work. Mortuary Science is very fascinating, and I’ve found that my fine arts background is coming in handy more than I thought it would. There’s an interesting connection between the two. :)

        • Leslie, I spent a little time educating myself on Mortuary Science. It is really a fascinating field. You’re so lucky to have the chance to learn all the things that you’re learning. How much I would like to look through a little window to see everything that you see!
