ART IS A WAY CHILDREN’S ART CONTEST. 2013

8

Dear children,

It has been a pleasure and a real honor to host our first art contest for you, here at Art is a Way.  Thanks a lot for submitting the artworks. Choosing a winner was not easy. But after lots of deliberation and feedback from my own children, we decided to give the prize to Sophie Cram, age 15.

Sophie doesn’t only enjoy creating things with her hands but she also plays the piano beautifully and on top of everything she is a remarkable athlete (below I included her video playing volleyball under the number 26, which is in my opinion a real work of art) It is inspiring seeing how  Sophie expresses herself  in such diverse ways. We think that Sophie is an inspiration for other children and adults as well.

Congratulations Sophie! We admire your many talents but also your beautiful soul and your self-confidence, your generosity, passion and strength.

I want to send a special hug to Sophie’s Mom,  fellow artist, writer and musician Kirsten Cram, who does all the right things to raise such unique children: Sophie, Caroline and Izzie. You will meet Caroline and Izzie below. Thank you Kirsten, for bringing so much beauty into this world!

Dear Caroline,

Your dolls are unique. The eyes are so cute! And how about the ballerina shoes? And the hairstyles! Maybe one day you should create some animal paper dolls as well, to go with the girls. Wouldn’t that be fun? We also love watching you play the cello. I can only imagine how many hours you spend practicing. I hope that I can see you perform in person one day, that would be great! Thanks a lot for sharing your talents with us and much love!

Dear Izzy,

We have watched this video so many times! Your music makes our ears happy. Congratulations on your amazing talent and keep up with the wonderful job. I have one request: Would you let me design the cover of your first album? Well, maybe the second, because your Mom is going to want to design the first icon smile ART IS A WAY CHILDRENS ART CONTEST. 2013 I hope that I can enjoy one of your concerts in person one day as well. Dear Lucy,

When I first saw your body of work I could not believe that it was coming from someone so young. What you create has such a personal signature already. I believe that one day you will be illustrating all kinds of books for children and adults. Would you send me a copy of your first published book? Don’t forget to sign it icon smile ART IS A WAY CHILDRENS ART CONTEST. 2013 Congratulations on your talent, I cannot wait to see the amazing things that you will be creating in the future!

Dear Ritamarie,

I carefully observed your two entries and couldn’t help but notice your remarkable fine motor skills. I see the precision of those strokes in your painting and the perfection of the stitches in the little dress. Something tells me that you are self-confident, patient and persistent. Those are some amazing qualities to have. Those precious hands of yours are meant to create amazing things in your lifetime. Would you send me pictures of your new creations? I can’t wait to see them!

Dear Luis,

Your animation was a big hit over here in our household. My son Diego and my daughter Natalie are in love your fish, so am I. We are impressed by how strong that little fish is. We wonder what he eats for breakfast.  Are you going to create a movie with Pixar one day? (that’s a question from my son). Maybe you should start your own animation company in the future. If you ever need to hire a couple of helpers for your company, Natalie and Diego are available over here in Los Angeles, CA.

chloe ART IS A WAY CHILDRENS ART CONTEST. 2013

Dear Chloe,

I love the part in your poem that says: “my buds are my feelings, you help me open them up so I can feel better…” What a beautiful way to represent feelings. You are a sensitive girl with a big heart. Isn’t it great to know that there is someone there to support us when we most need it? We also love your hand filled with little colors. I wonder if that’s how a hand looks like after touching a rainbow? Please keep writing and painting as you keep growing and enjoying the world around you. Sending my love!

Dear Hannah,

Your first drawing made us smile over here, we definitely believe that those 2 characters are related.  What a good sense of humor you have. I also love the poem about the tree. You wrote some deep things in that poem that left me thinking about life. Thanks a lot for that. The poem about your drawing book tells me that there are so many things that you’re going to be doing as a creative person. Your passion is contagious. Keep being you! I could write a whole book about you, but right now I want to say that I feel so lucky to be your Mom. Your creativity, your generous spirit and your passion for life are gifts that I enjoy everyday. I cannot wait to see all the wonderful things that you’re going to create tomorrow, and after tomorrow and the day after tomorrow… Thanks a lot for making of our lives such a fun experience. Dear Yuma,

You are a force of nature. If you created  this at age 3, I wonder what you will be creating  as an adult! The bright colors in your art are as beautiful as your smile. They make me happy and they also make me want to start painting something right now. Also, something tells me that you love cats, do you? We have lots of cats in our backyard. We don’t own any of them, but they own our backyard. They come from different houses in the neighborhood to have daily meetings.  I think that I am going to show them your creations. Hugs to you and your beautiful Mom as well!

Dear Matti,

I love the aquatic world that you created inside this box. I wonder if the sparkling sand has magic powers. My favorite fish is the one with the little black eye. He seems to be a curious little fish looking for adventures. Or maybe he’s looking for his friend Nemo. Did you see that movie called Finding Nemo?  I also wanted to say that Yuma must feel very lucky to have you as a brother. I try to imagine what adventures you both enjoy together. My brother Alex and I have so many good memories from our childhood. I hope that I can meet you and your beautiful family one day. I sending a big hug!

Dear Nicolas,

Your self-portrait  is great. I really like the little spirals in your ears. Do they mean that you were listening to music while drawing this artwork? I also love how many teeth you drew. I was thinking that having some extra teeth is a very convenient thing. If I ever lose one of mine, can I ask you for a replacement? I also love your conceptual art on the right titled: THE MUSEUM IS OPEN. That phrase has so many possibilities. Imagine how much we could see when a museum is open. I don’t like it when museums are closed icon wink ART IS A WAY CHILDRENS ART CONTEST. 2013 Love!

Dear Macy,

Your portraits make me happy because you drew smiles on them! I have to confess that the first one makes me a little bit hungry as well. Why? Because the buttons on the girl’s dress remind me of chocolate chip cookies. Yum yum! The pink color on the second portrait makes me think of fresh juicy strawberries. Do you like strawberries? We love them over here! Love!

Dear Sebby,

I’m so happy that I can finally see what a cat really looks like! Thanks a lot. I’m sure that this is a very friendly cat as well. Because  he’s not trying to eat the 3 birdies. Birds are my favorite animals ever. When I saw yours I immediately fell in love with them. What is your favorite animal? And also, is the little green figure next to the small red bird a girl? It looks like she’s carrying a bag. I was wondering if there is some bird food in that little bag? Sending a hug!

Dear Annabelle,

I can see you attending art school in a few years. Have you thought about it? If yes, Congratulations! Your talent is obvious. I believe that this is the perfect time for you to start putting together a portfolio with your creations. In a few years you will have a whole body of works, which is key when applying for any art school. These characters have lots of personality. I recommend that you keep creating new ones to form a series. I can also see you creating comic book stories. Have lots of fun with your explorations and feel free to send me images of the new work. I would love to see it!

Because I have the pleasure to know you in person I can say that you’re not only a smart, sweet and friendly boy. You are also very creative and talented. I love your pencil drawings. I still have the one that you did with the word ART. Natalie told me that this is Harry Potter. I love his eyes, they’re very expressive. I also love the lines on the background, they add lots of drama, just like in the movies. I can’t wait to see your new pencil creations!

Dear Brooke,

This portrait reminds me so much of my childhood. Specially of the first time that I saw the ocean, I think that I had tears in my eyes just like this little girl. I see that the you drew the ocean behind her.  I love your girl’s pigtails,  her top and also the skirt. She has a really nice style.  My daughter and I agree that the lacy necklace that she’s wearing is very special. Is that a magic necklace? It looks handmade, everything handmade is special icon smile ART IS A WAY CHILDRENS ART CONTEST. 2013 Sending my love!

DIEGO AGE 7 ART IS A WAY CHILDRENS ART CONTEST. 2013

Dear Diego,

I love your painting of the wind. This is the very first painting of the wind that I see, thanks a lot for sharing it with us. You’re so creative! I wonder if the wind is playing with those pieces of newspapers. If I were the wind I would definitely enjoy playing with paper and also with dry leaves and balloons. I believe that balloons would be my favorite kind of toy because they can fly really high. I know that you love balloons too. I love you very, very, very, very much! You’re the best son that I Mom can ask for . I feel so lucky to be your Mom icon smile ART IS A WAY CHILDRENS ART CONTEST. 2013

Dear Nina,

These paper angels make me so happy. I believe that they’re in love with each other. The angel on the left has a very lovely smile, you know, like when angels fall in love. She’s also holding a heart with her right hand, maybe she’s trying to say: my heart is so happy! Her friend of the right seems a little shy because he’s not looking at the camera. But I can see his arrow pointing right at her friend. I cannot wait to see all the papercuts that you will be creating in the future. You get along very well with scissors. Dear Clayton,

This painting should be in a museum (or maybe in my living room icon surprised ART IS A WAY CHILDRENS ART CONTEST. 2013 ). I love it! All these colors talking with each other and moving around and flowing just like water flows in a river…it is all mesmerizing to me.  Your painting reminds me of how the Earth looks from above. I wonder if you have ever been on an airplane. If yes, have you looked down through the window? You see the most amazing things. Next time when I am on an airplane I am going to think about you. Please keep painting, you’re very talented!

Your drawing is so good and detailed. I love it how you created a whole little universe using only lines. The color blue looks beautiful on the white background. Chelsea ART IS A WAY CHILDRENS ART CONTEST. 2013

Dear Chelsea,

I agree with what you wrote on your painting. It is true that like the Seasons,  we’re always growing and changing, specially at your age. I still remember when I was 14. That is a time for a lot of changes. I wish that I could be 14 again. Please enjoy this time of your life as much as possible and keep painting and doing lots of creative things with your hands. Nothing helps us grow more than creativity. It is a kind of growth that cannot be measured by inches, but by your level of happiness. Thanks a lot for sharing your art with us!

Everything in your creations tell me that you’re a positive person who enjoys life. Am I right? Life is a beautiful experience and we should all remember to enjoy it. Thank you for sharing your happiness with us and keep creating new artworks. Each one will add a little bit of magic to your life icon smile ART IS A WAY CHILDRENS ART CONTEST. 2013 Hugs and love!

Have you been to the magic land of fairies? It seems like you know a lot about that place. Or maybe you have dreamed about going there? In any case, your artworks seem to come from a place of mystery and adventures. I have to tell you that I specially love the wings of the fairy on the right side just below this text. Those are some very elaborate wings with long curly feathers. I wish that I had wings like those. Please keep dreaming and creating. As I told you in my e-mail, you are a strong, smart and special person. I admire how you keep such a positive attitude regardless of your challenges. That will always make a great difference. Through these artworks I can see someone who loves life and nature. I agree with what you wrote about  accepting our imperfections and letting them be a part of who we are. You are right: perfect is imperfect. Keep painting and writing and being exactly who you are. Hugs and love!

Dear friend, I hope that you enjoyed this virtual gallery. I also hope that it inspires you to support children’s creativity in any way you can. By doing so we’re putting our little grain of sand for making of the world a better place.

Children, be ready for the second edition of this contest in 2014. Save your artworks and take pictures of them. I am looking forward to sharing your talents with the world!

And remember, when it comes to art and creativity, competition is just a way of having fun. Let me say that if you enjoy creativity, then you’re already a winner. Congratulations!

  1. Wow. What a wonderful experience to look at the artists on your site today. I wrote on my blog today about Opening Day (baseball), spring, and infinity.
The artists you honored today renew my spirit just as much, if not more, as any of that. Especially infinity. What could be more vivid that youth to an oldster like me.
Thanks for making all of this possible, Elsa!

  5. Dear Elsita,

I wish you could have seen Sophie’s face when I told her the news. I was picking her up from school (and had just found out myself)…she was so happy, unable to talk because her smile was taking up her whole face.

Thank you for such beautiful words of encouragement to all three of my girls. We are so inspired by you, your gifted touch, and your way of seeing beauty in everything.

What better use of our energy than to create and to encourage children to create? Thank you for this. xo

    • Dear Kirsten,
Your words make me so happy :) Well, you should see Natalie’s and Diego’s face over here every time we listen to your girls music. Natalie is even seriously thinking about starting to learn how to play an instrument. I think that all of you form one of the most special families on this planet. 7. Dear Elsita, wow, I am so impressed with all the beautifull things all those kids made and do (music, sports)! Thanks for putting all these works of art online for us to enjoy. Must have been a lot of work too. Thanks for your kind words.
I would like to meet you also one day!! :) Tomorrow I will show this to Yuma and matti.

Thanks for that. Hope you are fine….

  8. Elsa, Thank you so much for this wonderful collection of children’s art and allowing us all to enjoy it too! I also want to thank you for taking the time to write a meaningful response to each of the children. I so enjoyed looking at all the art work and reading your responses!
