Lauren Rosenthal McManus
My partner at Artyard, Jill Kearney, and I, saw Lauren Rosenthal‘s work for the first time at a group exhibition and we both had the same reaction. From looking at her pieces we knew that she had a special brain, so we tracked her down. Meeting her in person was even a better experience. Lauren is not only smart, curious, and full of energy, but easy-going and a pleasure to work with. She created the pieces above for the exhibition that I curated for ArtYard last year.
Ecology, the science of relationships between organism and environment, serves as the conceptual framework of Lauren’s investigation, and maps provide the visual language for her expression. Among other things, she creates fascinating drawings using grounded river rocks and water, like the ones in the pictures above, which are representations of actual watershed communities along the Delaware River.
